revealed Kelsey Grammer has why David Hyde Pierce will not be returning for the upcoming Frasier reboot on the Paramount+ streaming service.
The 67-year-old actor said he and producers had to think about the reboot after David, 63, bowed out of the project.
‘David basically decided he wasn’t really interested in repeating the performance of Niles,’ Kelsey said of his onscreen brother in an article on People on Wednesday.
Upcoming reboot: Kelsey Grammer, shown in June 2021 in New York City, has revealed why David Hyde Pierce will not be returning for the upcoming Frasier reboot on Paramount+
Kelsey said they were going to bring back the whole ‘legacy’ cast that included David, Peri Gilpin, Jane Leeves and John Mahoney, who died in 2018, but the new direction has worked out.
‘In a very funny way, it just took us to a new place, which was what we originally wanted to do anyway, which was a Frasier third act,’ Kelsey explained. ‘It’s an entirely new life for him.’
Kelsey in the spin-off series Frasier portrayed psychiatrist Frasier Crane, while David played his younger brother and fellow psychiatrist Niles.
John played their retired police officer father Martin Crane, Peri played Frasier’s producer Roz Doyle and Jane Leeves was featured as Daphne Moon, Martin’s live-in caregiver.
Bowed out: The 67-year-old actor said he and producers had to rethink the reboot after 63-year-old David, shown in a season two still, bowed out of the project.
Frasier ran for 11 seasons on NBC from September 1993 to May 2004.
We start rehearsals in February. We’ve been working on it honestly for about six or seven years,” Kelsey said of the reboot series.
It’s been on the slow burner. We were like, this is not a bad idea. Maybe this is a good idea!, he added.

The reboot will see Frasier living alone in a new city.
‘He’s our brave little soldier that continues on in life, finding new challenges and a new love and new people and a new city and stuff like that,’ Kelsey said.
‘I’m really very excited about it, and we’ll certainly always honor the past. We have to honor the fact that John Mahoney died and that Martin is no longer with us. We’ll be dealing with that for sure,’ he added.
Family show: Kelsey and David are shown with the late John Mahoney who portrayed their father Martin Crane in a 1999 still from season seven
John died in a Chicago hospital in February 2018 due to complications from throat cancer at the age of 77.
The show will also deal head-on with the absence of other people from Frasier’s life, including Niles, Roz and Daphne.
We’ll certainly be responsive about the fact that there was a brother and such. But the new world for Frasier is one of new friendships — and some new twists and turns he didn’t know were still in there,” Kelsey said.
Third season: John, Jane Levees, Kelsey, David and Peri Gilpin are shown in a season three promo still for Frasier.
