Top247 DL Johnny Bowens gives Oregon a Thanksgiving commitment

Surrounded by his family, Converse (Texas) Judson Top 247 defensive lineman Johnny Bowens announced his commitment to Oregon on Thanksgiving afternoon during a broadcast on the 247 Sports YouTube Channel. Bowens chose to play his college football for the Ducks over his other finalists in Texas and Texas A&M.

The four-star Bowens becomes committing No. 24 for head coach Dan Lanning and his first-year Oregon staff, adding to a class ranked No. 11 by the 247 Sports Composite.

“Coach Lanning, I trust him,” Bowens told 247Sports. “He’s a good guy and not just him, the whole staff. I know everybody up there.

“The coaches know what they’re doing,” Bowens continued. That’s why that school is on the rise. Coach Lanning knows exactly what he’s doing and he’s already been to the National Championship (last year as Georgia’s defensive coordinator) and all that. I feel good about him. He just came from having four defensive players drafted in the first round. I like Coach Tosh (Lupoi), he’s been in the NFL. They have good experience and know what they’re doing.”

The 6-foot-3, 265-pound Bowens took his official to Oregon the last weekend of September. That was his third time in Eugene.

“They took the lead the last time I went up there,” Bowens said. He is a former Aggies verbal. “The coaches, Coach Lanning talking to me more, I felt like I built my relationship with them way more.”

Bowens is tabbed by the Top247 as the No. 222 prospect in the country. He joins a class that includes fellow four-star defensive linemen A’mauri Washington, Terrance Green and Blake Purchase. Other key players in the fold at the point of attack include My’Keil Gardner, Tevita Pome’e, Teitum Tuioti and Jaeden Moore As Lanning and the Ducks will lose several difference makers up front and will count on many of these guys to play as true freshmen.

“We got the d-line, we got the linebackers coming in,” Bowens said. “I just feel like we’re going to be real big. I feel like when we get there we can make something shake and go for a Natty.”
